If you’re a business owner, you know how important it is to have an online presence. But with so many options out there, it can be hard to decide which one is best for your business. Two of the most popular options are Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Both can help increase visibility for your site, but which should you choose? Let’s take a look at the main differences between PPC and SEO.

PPC Advertising

PPC advertising involves paying for search engine results. Ads are placed on search engine results pages (SERPs) based on keyword bids that you set. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad, hence the name “pay-per-click.” The amount that you pay depends on how much competition there is in your industry or niche. This type of digital marketing can be very effective since it gets your website in front of potential customers quickly.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Using SEO means optimizing your website so that it appears higher up in organic (non-paid) search engine results pages (SERPs). When someone searches for something related to your business, the goal is to show up near the top of their SERPs so they can easily find you. To do this, you need to use relevant keywords throughout your website’s content, as well as optimize titles, meta descriptions, and images.

SEO also requires some technical work such as setting up a robots file or sitemap and ensuring that all pages are properly linked together within the site structure. It also focuses on improving user experience with features such as page loading times and mobile optimization, which helps to ensure that visitors stay longer on websites and convert into customers.

The Real Estate Analogy

Here at Fleek Consulting we often use the real estate analogy to explain the differences between pay-per-click advertising an search engine optimization.

PPC is similar to renting a home, while SEO is more like buying and investing in a piece of property so that it continues to produce revenue for you, long-term.

With PPC, as long as you pay to play, you’ll be able to continue renting space at the top of Google’s search results pages and getting leads from your ads. As soon as you stop paying, your ads won’t show up anymore.

With SEO, on the other hand, you don’t have to pay for the space. Once you create a website and a free Google Business Listing, you’re going to show up somewhere in the search engine. But to get into the top spots on the first page, you’ll have to invest in various long-term SEO efforts, like content optimization, local directory listings and link building.

The good news is that once you start to rank in search results for certain keywords, maintaining those ranking is relatively easy – and less costly than continuing to pay for Ad space.

Essentially, you’re investing in building a property that will become more valuable over time. It takes longer to build up your SEO efforts and get results from them, but once it’s built, it takes less effort and expense to keep it maintained.

So which one is right for you?

Now that you understand the differences between PPC and SEO, the next step is to decide which one is right for your business.

If you’re looking for quick results or have a short-term campaign in mind, then PPC might be a better option since it can get your website in front of people quickly. Especially if you’re just getting started and waiting for your SEO efforts to kick in.

On the other hand, if you want to invest in something that will build up your online presence over time, then SEO is likely a better choice. It may take longer to get results from SEO, but once it’s established, it will help grow your business for many years to come, ultimately resulting in more sustainable long-term growth than PPC.

At Fleek Consulting, we recommend an integrated, multichannel marketing approach that combines a variety of strategies – including both PPC and SEO – to maximize your visibility in search results and boost the likelihood of conversion at all possible touch-points along the customer journey.
